Montauk sits at the very tip of the South Fork, about 120 miles and ‘three hours from everything’ — the lighthouse, Ditch Plains, the harbor and the resorts strung along Old Montauk Highway. It is the wildest, furthest and most relaxed of the East End destinations.

From Manhattan the run is the LIE to Route 27 all the way east, three to three-and-a-half hours in fair conditions and longer on a summer weekend. Past East Hampton the road narrows and the traffic thins; a chauffeur who knows the timing gets you to dinner, not to a standstill outside Napeague.
